How to Clear Your Browser’s Cache on Windows and Mac

Windows & Mac • Step-by-step help

Give your browser a fresh start.

If a website will not load, looks wrong, or shows old information, clearing your browser’s cache may help. The cache is a collection of temporary website files saved on your computer.

Before you start

Save any unfinished work first. Follow the steps for the browser you use to open websites. Menu names can vary slightly by version.

Keep your saved information. In Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, select only the cache option. Leave cookies, passwords, and history unchecked. In Safari, use Empty Caches as described below.

Choose your browser

Your browser is the app you open to visit websites. Choose its name above, or scroll down to find it.

Windows or Mac

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner. Choose Delete browsing data. If you do not see it, look under Settings → Privacy and security.
  3. Set Time range to All time.
  4. Put a check mark next to Cached images and files.
  5. Remove the check marks from every other box. Keep cookies, browsing history, passwords, and other saved information.
  6. Click Delete data and wait for it to finish.
  7. Close Chrome. On a Mac, use Chrome → Quit Google Chrome at the top of the screen. Open Chrome again and try the website.

What happens next?

The first visit to a website may take a little longer after clearing the cache. This is normal. If the problem continues, restart your computer and try again. Then contact your usual support person with the website address, your browser name, and what you see on the screen.

These instructions apply to desktop web browsers. They do not clear files downloaded inside the vablet app.
